Summary

Living World

  • A new map per episode is something we’re trying to do for each Living World update
  • 2-3 month cadence for episodes
  • Gliding skills from Bloodstone Fen didn’t feel as thematic in Ember Bay so we didn’t include them
  • LFG for Ember Bay will be added later on via a hotfix
  • No current plans to retrofit old hearts to be repeatable
  • Current events will continue to be in between chapters and holidays

Legendary Armor/Weapons

  • Putting finishing touches on heavy set, medium and light set still need a bit of work. Three sets will be released together. When Heavy armor is ready we will ready a video.
  • The legendary armors are a big step up visually, while staying within the general design of the precursor armor that’s in the game today. So let’s be clear, the light armor builds up from the existing robe design and the medium armor builds up from the existing trenchcoat design.
  • We’ll bundle legendary weapons with episodes whenever they’re ready, until we complete the set.
  • The Envoy II Collection will be completed in a future raid.
  • Storm Bow was never intended to be a legendary.
  • Have not decided the mechanics for runes in the Legendary armor.
  • There are no current plans for retroactive changes to make precusor journey streamlined like Eureka.

Fractal/Raids

  • Since fractals is content that does not require HoT, we elected to exclude HoT stats. However, the team is going to talk about the possibility of adding ascended gear with HoT stats to the vendor in the future.
  • We may be able to do something similar to what WvW did for the Runes of Leadership and let you buy them from BLING while still restricting it to HoT owners in some way.
  • We’re continuing to work on new fractal islands, and really looking forward to their release
  • We did anticipate a demand spike for matrices , but we feel that this is actually a good thing as he more valuable matrices are, the more rewarding fractals become
  • It’s unlikely that we will be adding more Matrix drops, but if the price that Matrices stabilizes at is an amount that is significantly higher than we expected, we can look into adjusting vendor prices to compensate.
  • We still want to make sure that old fractals are at our new standard of quality. Our focus right now is new fractals, but overhauls are much less work.
  • Legendary insights will continue to drop in the next raid.

PvP/WvW

  • Foefire is one of our highest played maps but if the community wants and overhaul like capricorn then we can start thinking about it.
  • The desire, whenever possible, is to release major balance changes during a PvP off season.
  • The goal of world linking is good matches (there are problems with glicko adjusting quickly enough to create good matches but that is a problem with glicko not world linking). It would be nice if World Linking made every tier competitive with every tier but it’s just not realistic.
  • For WvW, there will be more polls soon. Specifically another priority poll and a poll on whether or not repair hammers should become an official part of the game. Besides that we have the deployable cannon beta coming, as well as some more scoring updates, and QoL changes.
  • Upgraded objectives giving more points will be the next thing we add.
  • Skirmish multiplier based on time of day (time zone valuation) and last stand, a comeback mechanic at the end of the week, are still being evaluated as potential changes.
  • Players seem to enjoy that WvW has been broken down into 2 hour Skirmishes because it is more digestible. However, we are still gathering feedback and gathering data.
  • There will be several balance changes in the next balance update that were specifically made for WvW.

Misc

  • Since July we removed some alpha testers and an influencer who abused their early access to content to generate profit for themselves or others.
  • Today’s release has new uses for 16 existing items. We tracked their prices and were ready to hold the release, even this morning, to change recipes if any of the 16 experienced a price spike prior to launch. None did.
  • Mac client is at the point where we are fixing specific bugs instead of the big general ones. Still no release date.
  • Remember, NCSOFT is our parent company, but decisions about GW2 come from us. Someday we’ll have a lot to talk about regarding the next expansion pack, but not today, and not any time soon.
  • We’re pretty happy with the current pricing of the guild decorations. It allows for groups and guilds to have a new goal to work towards, rather than buy everything on day one. That being said, we’ll keep an eye on the acquisition rates and adjust appropriately if we feel the need.
  • There’s actually a ton of supply of leather and flax. But apparently the trading price, while expensive, is not enough to get people to sell what they’re sitting on, or to farm them for profit. People have more wealth than they used to and it’s changing behavior. We want to give the market time to balance itself.

Living World

1.Is a new map (PvE/PvP) something that you willtry to do for every Living Story chapter? Or it’ll be like LS2 with 2 maps for the whole season ? Are you aiming for the same quality/quantity of content in future releases?

  • Yes, a new map per episode is something we’re trying to do for each Living World update.

2. How soon can we expect Episode 3? 2-3 months like last time?

  • As Mo said, episodes are planned in a 2 to 3 month cadence, but will be released when they are ready.

3. Did you consider giving us the ability to use the combat gliding skills from Bloodstone Fen in Ember Bay aswell and maybe some future maps where it would make sense?

  • Re: the gliding skills in Bloodstone Fen. So we did talk about it, but as they came online they really felt thematic for Bloodstone Fen, both in looks and gameplay. When we tried them in Ember Bay it didn’t feel as good and tacked on so we went without the skills.

4. There is no section in the LFG for the new map. Is this overlooked? Or is it cause it will just be too much clutter after some more new maps?

  • The LFG category will be coming in via hotfix.

5. About new repeatable hearts: will the core tyria maps get repeatable hearts at some point?

  • While nothing is ever completely off the table, there isn’t a current plan to retrofit older hearts.Of course there’s a much better chance of them showing up in future maps, depending on how they fit into the release at large.

6. Thanks for the great release, really loved the story. Do you plan on keeping the ‘current event’ style of in between LS chapter content? I personally enjoy the teaser lore and hints at future content.

  • I’m glad you’re enjoying the current events! The current plan is to keep making them as time allows between chapters and holidays.

Legendary Armor/Weapons

1. Here’s an update on legendary armor. We’re putting the finishing touches on the heavy set. In a couple weeks when it’s ready we’ll cap a video and post it. But medium and light armor still need quite a bit of polish work. We’ll release all three sets together, and we’ll take time for the details rather than rushing to release them on schedule, so bear with us a while longer.

  • The legendary armors are a big step up visually, while staying within the general design of the precursor armor that’s in the game today. So let’s be clear, the light armor builds up from the existing robe design and the medium armor builds up from the existing trenchcoat design. We’re currently putting our effort into making the armors visually differentiated and great looking rather than into wholesale redesign.

2. Should we expect new legendary weapons to be released with each LS episode or will they be on a different schedule? Also, what weapon(s) will be released next?

  • Just like with Fractals and PvP updates, we’ll bundle legendary weapons with episodes whenever they’re ready, until we complete the set.

3. Do you plan the "Envoy Armor II" Collection to use more collection items from upcoming raids / raid wings or will I be able to create Legendary Armor just by playing Forsaken Thicket? wildstar-gold - GW2 Sept 20 Developer AMA on Reddit

  • The Envoy II Collection will be completed in a future raid.

4. Was the storm bow originally the second longbow but made gemstore after the suspension?

  • No, the Storm Bow was never intended to be a legendary.

5. How will the legendary armor behave mechanically, regarding runes? Will there be there an update for that or will we still be re-runing?

  • We are looking into doing something for this, but haven’t finalized what, if anything, that we’ll end up releasing.

6. Do you plan on retroactively changing precursor joyrneys to make them similar to Eureka?

  • there are no current plans for retroactive changes.

Fractals/Raids

1. Thank you guys so much for the ability to NON-RNG buy Ascended items for those of us that hate crafting. Is there any intent to include HoT stats, or just plan to let us account for the stat swap cost in our total costs?

  • Since fractals is content that does not require HoT, we elected to exclude HoT stats. However, the team is going to talk about the possibility of adding ascended gear with HoT stats to the vendor in the future.
  • Maybe. We want to restrict acquisition of HoT stats to players who own HoT, and as Fractals is a core game mode those stats weren’t included originally. That said, we may be able to do something similar to what WvW did for the Runes of Leadership and let you buy them from BLING while still restricting it to HoT owners in some way.

2. Do you have any news to share on fractals? Some juicy rumors about a new island, for instance?

  • We’re continuing to work on new fractal islands, and really looking forward to their release. Stay tuned.

3. Can we get some sort of word on what the status of Legendary Armor and the next raid is?

  • The next raid release is coming along nicely and of course the team is eager to get it out to the raiders of Tyria. It is important that we continue to meet the level of quality you expect from the raids team and we are working hard to deliver that experience for you.

4. The new BLING fractal vendor is a great addition to fractals overall but it worries me that you added yet another matrix sink without adjusting drops accordingly meaning prices IN THEORY should raise for them (they spiked already but it may be a temporary spike). Did you take any price projections into consideration?

  • We did anticipate a demand spike, but we feel that this is actually a good thing. The more valuable matrices are, the more rewarding fractals become. When matrices were at 20s, it was not profitable to salvage rings. Now, salvaging ascended rings yields a good profit.
  • It’s expected that Matrix prices will always spike immediately after a patch… the question is, how much and for how long? This is much harder to predict, so we tend to play it safe and high-ball our numbers. Over time we expect price to drop and stabilize at a much lower value.
  • It’s unlikely that we will be adding more Matrix drops, but if the price that Matrices stabilizes at is an amount that is significantly higher than we expected, we can look into adjusting vendor prices to compensate.

5. Can we expect to see big overhauls to specific fractals like Snowblind, Swamp, and Cliffside in the future?

  • We still want to make sure that old fractals are at our new standard of quality. Our focus right now is new fractals, but overhauls are much less work.

6. Will Legendary Insight continue to be rewarded in the next raid?

  • Yes they will.

7. Are you planning to revamp the underwater fractal, or at least do something about dolphin path? Getting stunned by kraits after successfull dodge is really annoying.

  • The underwater fractal is definitely lacking in some regards, and it isn’t the best experience for sure. We have plans to revisit it in the future.

PvP

1. I am still very unhappy with the atate of PVP mostly because duels last too long (or indefinitely in some cases) due to a large amount of sustain that every single class currently has, this is aggregated by maps that take longer to traverse or have even more LOSing options as the latest 2 new maps. This concerns me greatly as fights last way too long thanks to lmited effectiveness of rotation on these maps.
Are you looking to release the same kinds of maps in future or reduce sustain(and boons) in future or is this the general trend for pvp where individual skill matters less than being the first to a cap and making it almost impossible to turn over a cap in a small skirmish?

  • The PvP teams goal is to make PvP players happy by creating content and adjusting content. We have already started doing specific skill splits for skills that we feel are having negative effects on gameplay in PvP and release our new maps as betas so we can make adjustments based on feedback from the community.

2. I absolutely love the new Capricorn, I hope you won’t make it another reskinned copy of Foefire like you did with Spirit Watch and Skyhammer. Have you considered updating old maps like you did with Capricorn? I’ve done a decent amount of rated PvP this year and I can tell you that Legacy of the Foefire is a super newbie trap.

  • Nothing is ever off the table. For fire is one of our highest played maps but if the community wants and overhaul like capricorn then we can start thinking about it.

3. I noticed no class balance was done this time around, will class balance patches be limited strictly to being released after a PvP season ends?

  • The desire, whenever possible, is to release major balance changes during a PvP off season.

Misc

1. Here’s an update on insider trading. Since July we removed some alpha testers and an influencer who abused their early access to content to generate profit for themselves or others.

We have a small, dedicated group of core alpha testers who help us test Living World episodes. They’re overwhelmingly trustworthy. But we recognize that it only takes one abusive alpha tester to make it all feel very unfair to those players who aren’t in the alpha test program. We’ve been ramping up other forms of testing, including internal testing and Live beta testing of WvW updates. But we’re not going to undermine our ability to put out great content releases. Content is still our top priority.

Today’s release has new uses for 16 existing items. We tracked their prices and were ready to hold the release, even this morning, to change recipes if any of the 16 experienced a price spike prior to launch. None did.

2. My usual question for AMAs: status update on the Mac client development?

  • I have had characters running around in game! We are to the point where we’re fixing specific bugs instead of the big general ones. We’ve still got not release date but significant progress is being made!

3. A more direct question. Recent news about GW2’s financials haven’t been good, re: the drop in gem sales and such. NCSoft’s apparent plan is to expedite the release of the next expansion, but in my view that seems to be dangerous – I believe that HoT would have had better sales if it was delayed a little longer and had released with more of what came after (launched with raid wing 1, at least). What’s your opinion on it, if you’re able to talk about the game’s future/financials?

  • Remember, NCSOFT is our parent company, but decisions about GW2 come from us. Don’t read too much into a one-off statement like that. Someday we’ll have a lot to talk about regarding the next expansion pack, but not today, and not any time soon.

4, You added default builds to PvP. Might this be any indication you are working on build templates for PvE and WvW as well? Perhaps this is a test in that direction?

  • PvP Default Builds and Build Templates are different systems. The update to default builds simply added accessibility to an already existing system.

5. Since gw1 weapon skins have been added to the gemstore, is there any chance that y’all could add popular gw1 armors as outfits on the gemstore?

  • We chose those weapon skins to release around the GW2 anniversary as part of our celebrations. We selected ones with nostalgia or things that we thought would be fun to recreate in GW2. We already have added some popular other GW1 outfits and armor skins such as Chaos Gloves, Gwen’s Attire, the White Mantle Outfit and things like Lyssa’s Regalia. I’d say we’ll continue to find inspiration in the Guild Wars franchise wildstar-gold - GW2 Sept 20 Developer AMA on Reddit

6. I would like to kindly ask for you to lower Amount of fractal relics needed for one fragement in guild hall for decorations. 150 relics is just too much, specially now that there is so many more uses that you need relics if you want to buy asc armor and such. good job on update.

  • We’re pretty happy with the current pricing of the guild decorations. It allows for groups and guilds to have a new goal to work towards, rather than buy everything on day one. That being said, we’ll keep an eye on the acquisition rates and adjust appropriately if we feel the need.

7. Do you think you guys will ever consider adding the existing/new gliding skills to other maps ? One thing I immediately noticed when I entered EB was the lack of the gliding skill #5, it really made gliding faster and more fluid.

  • Yes we’ve talked about it, but I don’t have a concrete answer right now..but it’s certainly not off the table for future releases.

8. T6 leather.. When can we expect a fix?

  • Historically we’ve done quite a few tweaks to supply when prices get outside the range we intended. But we’re going to hold off on that for a while. There’s actually a ton of supply of leather and flax. But apparently the trading price, while expensive, is not enough to get people to sell what they’re sitting on, or to farm them for profit. People have more wealth than they used to and it’s changing behavior. We want to give the market time to balance itself.

WvW

1. Is the goal of the linking system to spread people across servers or to simply rebalance population every time relinking happens?

The goal of world linking is good matches (there are problems with glicko adjusting quickly enough to create good matches but that is a problem with glicko not world linking). It would be nice if World Linking made every tier competitive with every tier but it’s just not realistic. It is even more unrealistic for EU because we do not pair worlds with different languages. So instead we try to at least make each tier competitive with one another. FSP was linked to be competitive with tier 1. The first few weeks glicko had not yet adjusted worlds that could compete with FSP into tier 1, and then this week FSP ended up rolling into tier 2 because of the bug that happened last Friday.

2. Whats the release schedule for WvW looking like for the next 2 months? I’ve also noticed that the polling has slowed down significantly, so I expect you guys are working on some pretty big things.

  • There will be more polls soon. Specifically another priority poll and a poll on whether or not repair hammers should become an official part of the game. Besides that we have the deployable cannon beta coming, as well as some more scoring updates, and QoL changes.

3. May I ask what scoring changes are possibly in the pipe? The only ones I remember from polling was time zone valuation and upgraded objectives giving more points.

  • Upgraded objectives giving more points will be the next thing we add.
  • Skirmish multiplier based on time of day (time zone valuation) and last stand, a comeback mechanic at the end of the week, are still being evaluated as potential changes. There has been a lot of talk on the forums about changing victory points to be something instead of 3 for first, 2 for second, and 1 for third which we are also considering.
  • We wanted to get Skirmishes into the game; see if it changed how people play WvW at all and then decide what we need to add or adjust. If skirmish continue to work out and players seem to enjoy them we can potentially add rewards to them as well.

4. We recently got skirmishes, so I was wondering if you could tell us if skirmishes are working out the way you’d hoped. More specifically : do they change matchups the way you anticipated or is the skirmish system only meant as a stepping stone towards further updates such as population scaling and catchup mechanics?

  • Players seem to enjoy that WvW has been broken down into 2 hour Skirmishes because it is more digestible. However, we are still gathering feedback and gathering data. We also wanted to get skirmishes in the game and beta them to determine if it was a complete solution or if it would instead serve as a stepping stone.
  • WvW is a game mode filled with a lot of different types of players. I agree that guilds are incredibly important but I also think roamers and all players that enjoy the game mode should be able to participate in the polls.
  • There will be several balance changes in the next balance update that were specifically made for WvW.
